What Can Hypnosis Help With? 100+ Reasons People Try Hypnosis

Pastel wellness books on a shelf labeled Smoking Cessation, Stress & Anxiety, Weight Management, and more, with Wellness Canada logo.

When most people think about hypnosis, they usually think of one or two things first. Smoking cessation is probably the best-known example, followed closely by stress, anxiety, weight management, or fears and phobias.

Those are certainly some of the most common reasons people contact Wellness Canada, but they represent only a small part of what people may choose to explore with hypnosis.

Hypnosis can be adapted to an enormous range of personal goals, habits, behaviours, performance concerns, emotional patterns, and areas of self-development. Some people come in because they want to stop doing something. Others want to start doing something more consistently. Some want to feel calmer, more confident, more focused, or more comfortable in situations that currently feel difficult.

There is no realistic way to create a completely exhaustive list because the reason someone seeks hypnosis can be very individual.

But this is a pretty good place to start.

What Can Hypnosis Help With?

If you have ever wondered what can hypnosis help with, the simplest answer is that people use hypnosis to work on many different patterns involving thoughts, feelings, habits, responses, confidence, motivation, performance, and behaviour.

That does not mean hypnosis is a medical treatment for every condition listed below, nor does it replace appropriate medical or mental health care. In many cases, people use hypnosis alongside other professional support.

The following list is intended to show the wide variety of goals people may bring to a Hypnotist.

To make it easier to read, we have grouped the examples into categories.

Smoking, Vaping & Tobacco Habits

Smoking cessation is one of the most frequently requested hypnosis services at Wellness Canada and is a good example of how hypnosis can be used to address a deeply established habit.

People may seek hypnosis for:

  • Cigarette smoking

  • Vaping

  • Nicotine habits

  • Social smoking

  • Smoking while driving

  • Smoking after meals

  • Smoking with coffee

  • Smoking during work breaks

  • Smoking when stressed

  • Smoking when drinking alcohol

  • Breaking long-established smoking routines

  • Reducing triggers associated with smoking

  • Building confidence as a non-smoker

  • Adjusting to daily routines without cigarettes

  • Strengthening motivation to remain smoke-free

For many people, smoking is not simply about nicotine. It becomes connected with routines, emotions, identity, stress relief, boredom, and hundreds of small moments throughout the day.

That is one reason smoking cessation hypnosis is often highly individualized.

Stress, Anxiety & Feeling More Calm

Stress and anxiety are also among the most common reasons people contact us.

People may use hypnosis to support goals such as:

  • General stress management

  • Feeling calmer

  • Reducing everyday worry

  • Managing overthinking

  • Feeling less mentally overwhelmed

  • Coping with workplace stress

  • Managing school or academic stress

  • Reducing anticipatory anxiety

  • Becoming calmer before important events

  • Feeling more comfortable in social situations

  • Managing nervousness before appointments

  • Reducing performance anxiety

  • Feeling calmer while travelling

  • Managing stress related to major life changes

  • Developing more effective relaxation habits

  • Learning to mentally switch off at the end of the day

Sometimes the goal is not to eliminate stress entirely. Stress is a normal part of life.

Instead, the goal may be to change how strongly someone reacts to it and how quickly they are able to return to a calmer state.

Weight Management, Eating Habits & Food-Related Goals

Hypnosis is also commonly sought by people who want to change eating behaviours or create healthier routines.

Examples include:

  • Weight management

  • Portion awareness

  • Slowing down while eating

  • Recognizing fullness

  • Reducing mindless eating

  • Reducing boredom eating

  • Changing evening snacking habits

  • Reducing emotional eating patterns

  • Making healthier food choices

  • Becoming more consistent with meal planning

  • Drinking more water

  • Reducing sugary drinks

  • Reducing highly processed snack foods

  • Building motivation for healthier routines

  • Becoming more comfortable leaving food unfinished

  • Developing a more balanced relationship with food

  • Increasing consistency with healthy eating goals

These goals can vary considerably from one person to another, which is why hypnosis sessions are usually most useful when they are built around the individual's actual habits rather than a generic weight-loss script.

Confidence & Self-Esteem

Confidence is an extremely broad category.

Someone may feel very confident in one part of life and completely unsure of themselves in another.

People may seek hypnosis for:

  • General confidence

  • Self-esteem

  • Speaking confidently

  • Workplace confidence

  • Leadership confidence

  • Confidence during meetings

  • Interview confidence

  • Dating confidence

  • Social confidence

  • Confidence returning to school

  • Confidence starting a new career

  • Confidence after retirement

  • Confidence after a major life change

  • Body confidence

  • Feeling more comfortable being photographed

  • Becoming less self-conscious

  • Speaking up for yourself

  • Setting boundaries

  • Becoming more comfortable saying no

  • Trusting your own decisions

  • Reducing excessive self-doubt

  • Feeling more capable

  • Developing a stronger sense of self-worth

Confidence hypnosis is not necessarily about becoming louder or more outgoing.

For many people, it simply means feeling comfortable enough to be themselves.

Habits & Behaviour Change

Habits are one of the largest areas in which people explore hypnosis.

Some habits are obvious. Others are small behaviours that someone has repeated for so long that they barely notice them anymore.

Examples include:

  • Nail biting

  • Skin picking

  • Hair pulling habits

  • Lip biting

  • Cheek biting

  • Knuckle cracking

  • Pen clicking

  • Fidgeting habits

  • Procrastination

  • Excessive phone checking

  • Excessive social media use

  • Staying up too late

  • Hitting the snooze button repeatedly

  • Difficulty maintaining routines

  • Habitual snacking

  • Shopping habits

  • Repetitive nervous behaviours

  • Improving consistency with positive habits

  • Breaking unwanted routines

  • Establishing new daily routines

One of the interesting things about habits is that the behaviour itself may be only one part of the pattern.

The cue that starts the behaviour and the reward associated with it can be just as important.

Motivation, Productivity & Goal Achievement

Sometimes people know exactly what they want to do.

The problem is getting themselves to consistently do it.

Hypnosis may be explored for:

  • Motivation

  • Goal setting

  • Following through

  • Procrastination

  • Productivity

  • Completing projects

  • Starting difficult tasks

  • Maintaining routines

  • Exercise motivation

  • Study motivation

  • Business motivation

  • Career goals

  • Creative goals

  • Personal development goals

  • Improving consistency

  • Staying focused on long-term goals

  • Reducing distraction

  • Improving time-management habits

  • Building momentum after a period of inactivity

  • Becoming more disciplined

  • Maintaining motivation after initial enthusiasm fades

Motivation is rarely just about wanting something badly enough.

Habits, expectations, confidence, avoidance, emotional associations, and previous experiences can all influence whether someone follows through.

Sleep & Insomnia-Related Goals

Sleep difficulties can have many different causes, so ongoing or unexplained sleep problems should always be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.

When hypnosis is appropriate, people may use it to support goals such as:

  • Relaxing at bedtime

  • Quieting racing thoughts

  • Developing a consistent bedtime routine

  • Reducing bedtime anxiety

  • Becoming less focused on whether sleep is happening

  • Returning to sleep after waking

  • Feeling more comfortable sleeping away from home

  • Reducing stress associated with bedtime

  • Improving relaxation before sleep

  • Breaking unhelpful bedtime habits

  • Adjusting mentally to shift changes or schedule changes

Sometimes the fear of not sleeping becomes part of the sleep problem itself.

In those situations, learning to approach bedtime differently can be an important part of the work.

Fears & Phobias

Fears can range from mildly inconvenient to extremely limiting.

People seek hypnosis for many different fears, including:

  • Fear of flying

  • Fear of driving

  • Highway driving

  • Bridges

  • Elevators

  • Heights

  • Needles

  • Blood tests

  • Dentists

  • Medical procedures

  • Public speaking

  • Dogs

  • Cats

  • Birds

  • Spiders

  • Insects

  • Snakes

  • Storms

  • Thunder

  • Confined spaces

  • Open spaces

  • Crowds

  • Escalators

  • Water

  • Swimming

  • Deep water

  • Boats

  • Vomiting

  • Choking

  • Germs

  • Being alone

  • Performing in front of others

The goal is not necessarily to make someone love the thing they currently fear.

Often, success simply means being able to respond more proportionately and comfortably.

Sports Performance

Sports are another area where the mental component can have a significant effect on performance.

Athletes may use hypnosis to work on:

  • Sports confidence

  • Concentration

  • Focus

  • Pre-game nerves

  • Competition anxiety

  • Visualization

  • Consistency

  • Staying composed under pressure

  • Recovering mentally after mistakes

  • Trusting learned skills

  • Maintaining focus during competition

  • Returning confidently after an injury

  • Golf performance

  • Putting confidence

  • Golf swing confidence

  • Hockey performance

  • Baseball performance

  • Basketball performance

  • Soccer performance

  • Running

  • Cycling

  • Swimming performance

  • Martial arts

  • Figure skating

  • Gymnastics

  • Dance performance

And then there are some very specific performance issues.

The Yips & Dartitis

Two examples that surprise many people are the Yips and Dartitis.

Both involve a situation in which someone may know exactly how to perform a movement, may have performed it successfully hundreds or thousands of times before, and yet suddenly finds that the movement feels difficult, interrupted, hesitant, or unreliable.

The Yips are commonly associated with sports such as golf, baseball, cricket, and other precision-based activities.

Dartitis refers specifically to difficulty smoothly releasing a dart despite the player consciously intending to throw it.

People experiencing these problems may seek hypnosis as part of their effort to reduce performance pressure, stop over-controlling an automatic movement, rebuild confidence, and allow well-practised skills to feel automatic again.

These are excellent examples of why a complete list of hypnosis applications is almost impossible to create.

Sometimes the reason someone walks through the door is incredibly specific.

Public Speaking, Performance & Stage Confidence

Performance-related hypnosis is not limited to athletes.

People may seek hypnosis for:

  • Public speaking

  • Presentations

  • Acting

  • Singing

  • Musical performance

  • Auditions

  • Dance

  • Stage performance

  • Giving speeches

  • Wedding speeches

  • Workplace presentations

  • Teaching

  • Lecturing

  • Media interviews

  • Podcast appearances

  • Video recording

  • Being comfortable on camera

  • Performing under observation

  • Test anxiety

  • Exam confidence

The goal is often not to eliminate every butterfly.

It is to prevent nervousness from interfering with someone's ability to use the skills they already have.

Pain Management & Physical Comfort

Pain should always be medically assessed when appropriate, particularly when it is new, unexplained, severe, or changing.

Hypnosis may sometimes be used alongside medical care to help people with goals involving:

  • Relaxation around discomfort

  • Changing attention toward pain

  • Coping with persistent discomfort

  • Reducing tension associated with pain

  • Becoming less fearful of anticipated discomfort

  • Developing calming strategies during medical procedures

  • Managing discomfort during dental procedures

  • Supporting relaxation during recovery

  • Increasing a sense of control around physical sensations

Hypnosis does not mean pretending pain is not there.

The aim is often to change the person's relationship with the sensations and the stress surrounding them.

Pregnancy, Birth & Hypno-Birthing

Pregnancy and childbirth are another area in which people may use hypnosis-based relaxation and mental preparation.

Goals may include:

  • Birth confidence

  • Relaxation during pregnancy

  • Preparing mentally for labour

  • Reducing fear surrounding childbirth

  • Practising relaxation techniques

  • Breathing and focus

  • Remaining calm during contractions

  • Building confidence in the body's natural processes

  • Preparing for different possible birth experiences

  • Partner-supported relaxation

  • Feeling more mentally prepared for delivery

Hypno-Birthing should complement, not replace, appropriate prenatal and medical care.

Anger & Emotional Regulation

Some people seek hypnosis because they want more control over how quickly or intensely they react.

Examples include:

  • Managing irritability

  • Becoming less reactive

  • Reducing angry outbursts

  • Creating a pause before responding

  • Managing frustration

  • Responding more calmly to conflict

  • Handling workplace frustration

  • Managing road-related anger

  • Improving emotional self-regulation

  • Letting go of minor annoyances more easily

  • Developing healthier responses to stressful situations

The aim is not to eliminate emotion.

Anger can contain useful information.

The goal may simply be to have more choice about what happens next.

Relaxation & General Wellbeing

Not everyone comes to hypnosis because something is wrong.

Some people simply enjoy the experience or want structured time to relax.

Hypnosis may be used for:

  • Deep relaxation

  • Stress reduction

  • Mental reset

  • General wellbeing

  • Taking intentional time for yourself

  • Learning self-hypnosis

  • Improving body awareness

  • Practising calm breathing

  • Feeling mentally refreshed

  • Creating a regular relaxation routine

  • Disconnecting from work

  • Supporting work-life balance

There does not always need to be a major problem to solve.

Sometimes relaxation itself is the goal.

Self-Discovery & Personal Growth

Other people are interested in understanding themselves better.

They may explore hypnosis for:

  • Self-discovery

  • Personal values

  • Clarifying goals

  • Understanding patterns

  • Exploring internal beliefs

  • Improving self-awareness

  • Building self-compassion

  • Strengthening personal identity

  • Decision-making

  • Life transitions

  • Career transitions

  • Retirement transitions

  • Relationship patterns

  • Developing healthier boundaries

  • Letting go of outdated beliefs

  • Exploring what feels meaningful

  • Creating a clearer vision for the future

These sessions can be particularly individualized because there may not be one specific behaviour someone wants to change.

The goal may simply be greater clarity.

Alcohol Support

Hypnosis may also be explored by people who are already appropriately supported in recovery and want additional help reinforcing healthier habits and responses.

Possible goals may include:

  • Strengthening commitment to sobriety

  • Changing routines previously associated with alcohol

  • Managing certain triggers

  • Building alternative coping strategies

  • Reinforcing healthier habits

  • Increasing confidence in social settings without drinking

  • Developing relaxation strategies that do not involve alcohol

Hypnosis should not be used as a substitute for medical care, withdrawal management, addiction treatment, or emergency support.

Growth & Spiritual Hypnosis

Some people are not seeking behavioural change at all.

They are simply curious.

Growth and spiritual hypnosis sessions may include:

  • Past Life Regression

  • Akashic Records

  • Life Between Lives

  • Guided Connection

  • Inner Child exploration

  • Shadow Work

  • Ancestral Healing

  • Chakra Alignment

  • Finding Your Soul Purpose

  • Manifesting and Abundance

  • Exploring personal symbolism

  • Reflective self-exploration

These sessions are approached as personal or experiential practices rather than as a way to establish historical or scientific facts.

For many people, the value lies in reflection, meaning, curiosity, or the experience itself.

Can Hypnosis Be Personalized for Something That Is Not on This List?

Absolutely.

In fact, this may be the most important point in this entire article. People rarely arrive neatly packaged into service categories.

Someone might say:

“I know this sounds strange, but every time I stand over a three-foot putt, my arm freezes.”

Or:

“I can practise my presentation perfectly at home, but when everyone looks at me, my mind goes blank.”

Or:

“I don't even know why I bite the inside of my cheek. I've just done it forever.”

Or:

“I throw darts perfectly during practice, but I can't release the dart during a tournament.”

Those are very different concerns, but they all involve patterns in how a person thinks, feels, responds, or behaves.

That is why hypnosis can be so adaptable.

Instead of asking only, “Is there a hypnosis service for this?” it can sometimes be more useful to ask:

What would I like to think, feel, or do differently?

That gives us somewhere to start.

More Than 100 Reasons, But One Individual at a Time

Even after listing well over 100 examples, this article still does not cover every reason someone might try hypnosis.

It probably never could.

New situations appear because people are different. Their habits are different. Their fears are different. Their goals are different. Their careers, sports, relationships, routines, and experiences are different.

That is also why hypnosis should not feel like choosing a generic recording from a catalogue.

At Wellness Canada, sessions are personalized around the individual, the goal they are working toward, and the patterns that are relevant to them.

Smoking Cessation, Stress & Anxiety, and Weight Management may be among our most requested services, but they are only the beginning of what people ask us about.

A free phone consultation is often the easiest place to start.
