Hypnosis is used for over 500 reasons. To list them all would be extensive. To simplify, Hypnosis is effective for anything goal that one would want to achieve. The magic ingredient is, that the person using hypnosis to achieve their goal must in fact "want" this end result.

Using an example of someone who smokes;

If the person does, in fact, want to quit, Hypnosis can be highly successful. If the person does not wish to quit but wishes for the Hypnosis to "make it so", I'm afraid that free will can win this battle

as the client does need to be on board with what they wish to achieve.
